Money isn’t everything. Most people know that if they work hard enough they will make money; in fact, making money is one thing most people who seek the advice of a financial planner know how to do.
The role of a financial planner is discover what their clients are truly seeking and then to help them achieve that goal . Yes, I believe that there are several basic steps that form a foundation for the planning process, starting with a clear understanding of where you are now, both financially and with your short and long term goals.
Removing anxiety, stress and suffering that arise from money issues requires an understanding of a clients feelings and what must be done to achieve that much needed peace.
Money is needed for survival, but the amount of money needed to survive varies with a person’s “real goals and needs”. As a society we look upon the “wealthy” (those with a lot of money) with envy and a false desire to become like them. I once heard a statement that has become part of my life, it goes as follows: The only thing you can take with you to heaven is another soul. That really set things in perspective for me and I pass that concept on to my clients during the planning process.
What is really important? It may be travel, or a small cabin in the pines. It might be time to write your life story or spend time with your children and grand children. In many cases, the money needed to achieve real goals is already available.
I believe that if you can identify your real goals and needs, the money needed to acheive those goals will be available ( yes it may take work and planning, but without stress and anxiety ‘
