It’s not who you know, it’s who knows you

It’s also how well they know you and the depth of your friendship. In business as well as in life the basic building block is relationships.If I had out 50 business cards in one day, what did they learn about me? A better question may be ” What did I learn about the 50 people I handed the cards to?

Many people make connections because they have a need or some motive. Usually that need or motive is driven by the desire to “get some business”.  It is much more important to focus on friendship first. Find something in common and barriers will disappear.I still use the FORD method to get people to visit with me. I ask questions about Family, Occupation, Recreation and Dreams.

In order to build a solid connection there must be a value connection exchanged. When you meet someone you may only have 20 seconds to build value and get a conversation started.  Write an answer to the following questions: What do you do? After you answer that question, ask yourself, if I met that person would I want to know more about him or her?

Now, answer the following questions; what is my value connection? (What value am I giving the person I meet?) What is the best way I can present this value? (write down an opening statement).
