Many years ago I attended a retreat and the message I came away with is still very alive in my mind. The speaker asked a simple question, Who is your best friend? We all had a few minutes to think and then were asked to share our answer. Of the approximately
100 people in attendance, about 60 said it was their spouse. The other 40% was divided between a parent, or a close friend. I was in the majority and chose the love of my life, my wife.
After the count he told us that we were all wrong. Our best friend had to be ourselves. He asked us to think about his answer and to reason out for ourselves why that was the correct answer. “The next day I thought about his challenge, in my mind I knew he was wrong and I was right, but then decided to play his game anyway.
In the next few days, as I was working on my list, I came to the conclusion that he was absolutely right.
- If we don’t take care of ourselves first, how can we help anyone else. That means exercise, eating right and getting enough rest and relaxation.
- If we don’t have a positive attitude, we not only drag ourselves down, but take along with us our family, friends and business associates.
- if we don’t educate ourselves first, how can we educate others?
- if we don’t work smarter instead of harder, we won’t have the time of funds to help others.
I hope that you are getting the message. Take care of yourself first but don’t stop there. share your good fortune ( health, education, positive attitude, and money) with those in need.
Courage is not the absence of fear but the ability to overcome it. (from Rudolph Giuliani)
