Throughout the course of our life we meet hundreds if not thousands of people. Wouldn’t it be great if all these people and their connections would be our current business clients? I believe that, if given a choice, people would like to do business with people they know. If you are like most of us, the hundreds or thousands of people you have met so far in your life, are but a fading memory. My definition of a prospect is anyone that can do business with you or can refer someone to you.
As I continue, let me state that going to a large gathering and collecting 200 cards is not making connections.
Make a list, today, of all the people you know; perhaps that list is already in outlook or in your blackberry. Print the list and then highlight all the people you would feel comfortable calling at 3 am if your car broke down 50 miles out of town. The highlighted names is your core or base group and are the ones that you can count on to help you make solid, new connections.
Let’s change the name from connections to relationships. The success of your business depends on the number of quality relationships that you have. Relationships seldom develop in a five minute conversation. Let me share a few of my guidelines for establishing quality relationships.
- Be friendly
- Let others do the talking, you listen. (use the FORD formula to initiate a conversation. Family,Occupation,Recreation,Dreams)
- Put yourself out as a person of value
- Don’t rush, relationships take time to develop
- Give to others first
- Stay in quiet contact.
- Have a positive attitude
Developing quality relationships is perhaps the fastest way to grow a business. Let’s build that “Support group” and continue this discussion.
“If you make yourself valuable, and memorable, others will want to make you part of their network”
Have a great day!
