Write a story about your vision for your business. If your business ls existing, write about how it started and how it’s going to get to your ultimate goal. If you are thinking about starting a business, write the story about the start, the work to be done and the final goal.
This is going to be a different type of story, it’s not going to be about you; create characters that are going to start and run your business and you write about their success and failures as they strive to reach their goal. You are visualizing their journey, describing their actions, their successes and failures along the way. The time line should be at least a three year look.
The purpose of your writing is to step back and look at your business from a third party point of view. The details are important; who are the characters that you chose to run or start a business? Why did you chose them? What is their background? What obstacles do they have to overcome? What is their family like, are they supporting the enterprise? Who do your characters go to for advice ( mentor, CPA, Attorney, insurance agent)? Do they have enough money to sustain the business during its growth period. Where is your business going to be located? What steps are your characters taking to build a solid foundation? Is this business a partnership, a corporation, a sole ownership??
Include in your story the family aspects such as children, time allocated to the family, as well as family concerns about money for college, vacations, braces, etc.
Work on your story everyday. Allocate at least one hour per day to work on your story. When you are finished, print your story, and bind it with a cover page. Make several copies; one for yourself and give a copy to each of your business support group members as well as your mentor.
This is not going to be an easy task, but then, neither is starting and operating a business. If you can’t complete this part of your
journey, you may not reach your goal in real life.
Back to my favorite saying: Character is the ability to carry on when the mood has left you.
Let me hear from you as you travel on your journey.
Have a great day!
Make this a realistic story, winning the lottery for funding the business does not count.
