So many excuses:
- I don’t have time
- I’m afraid I will make my clients/customers mad if they support the other side
- I don’t have extra money to contribute
- I don’t care who wins, it won’t make any difference
- I don’t know what they stand for
Did you notice the “I” word? Many small business owners are more concerned about themselves than the greater community. Who wins will have a direct impact on small businesses. The wrong election results will appear in the form of new taxes, more restrictions, less money available to grow your business, new health care issues, overall, it could curtail the freedom you have to operate and grow your business.
As a small business owner you have a responsibility not only to your family, but also to your community and your country. Taking a stand by supporting a candidate or a proposition shows that you will stand behind you convictions and take action.
You don’t have to personally know the people running for office; do research on what they stand for and then volunteer. The amount you have to contribute is not important; there are hundreds of jobs from making calls to putting up signs for your candidate, that need to be done. This is not a place to hand out business cards, but an opportunity to work hard and show your character. The payback may not be in the form of new clients, although fellow workers may look you up because of your “character”, but it will show up when you help win the freedom you need to grow your business.
This week look at all the candidates running for office, read all the propositions on the ballet and then commit some time to help, even if its only a few hours a week. It’s all about being a responsible business owner.
There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but these must never be a time when we fail to protest it.
