Here it is, the first week in October and Christmas displays are going up in all the major stores. The hype is starting and we, as consumers will be caught up in the “spending season”. No matter how hard up we are, there is always extra money for this special season. As a small business, you have to open your marketing bag and come up with ways that you can participate
The word “can’ t ” should never be part of your vocabulary; the statement we must use is “how can we make it work “? Yes, the trades, such as plumbers, carpenters, handyman service, carpet cleaners, electricians, etc, can package themselves with a nice bow and sell themselves as a gift. I’ll bet that there are a lot of families that would like a two or three hour gift of one of these trades.
If your product or service is more on the “no fun” list, you have a challenge to create a desire for the “practical” gift that you can provide. How about a gift of a retirement plan or a unique budgeting system? Think about piano lessons or guitar lessons or dancing lessons, or all other types of lessons as fun gifts. What about a three month membership to a gym?
I took a random look through the yellow pages and was able to come up with a gift idea for all the businesses we looked at. One of my biggest challenges was a machine shop, but with the help of the owner, we took some scrap metal that was previously sold for recycling, and we made some very unique candle holders to share as gifts for their clients.
Take a few days and spend time packaging your product or service for this special Christmas Season. You can be offering very unusual gifts which might merit a story in your local paper or on your local TV station. As you start this project, please remember my definition of Character: the ability to carry on after the mood has left you.
If you can imagine it, you can achieve it; if you can dream it, you can become it.
