Ignore Interruptions…avoid being rude

When running a small business, each phone call, e-mail or text may bring the next big “deal” you are hoping for. One of the hardest things to do as a small business owner is to ignore the phone call, text, etc. you want to answer to show that we are available for more business.

There are several important reasons for not answering:

  • If you are with a prospect/client they  deserve your undivided attention. In my opinion one of the rudest statements is ” excuse, I have to answer  this call”.  A better solution is to update your message on your phone with something like ” I will be tied up with a client until ____ (give time) ; please leave a message and I will return the call at that time. When I work with a client/customer, they always have my undivided attention as will you.”
  • Another reason is the interruption that prevents you from focusing on something you are doing; other then being with a client. Answering text, phones, etc. require a break in concentration.  Again, you can change the message to something like; ” I will be tied up until ____ ( give time) and will call you at that time.

If the person looking for you is important, they will leave a message. Being busy shows that you have clients and that you are organized in working with them. I believe in the saying; ” If you want something done, ask a busy person to do it.”

In my practice, I usually do my strategic focus plans with a client in a hotel or other place away from the office. I ask that they leave their cell phones at home and give my number as an emergency number.

It may surprise you, but your business may grow because you tell your clients, by your actions,. that they are the most important thing at this time and they will get your full undivided attention.

People should know what you stand for. They should also know what you won’t stand for.

Have a great day!
