As small business owners we usually run every aspect of our business, from cleaning the office to delivering the product. These two things we may be able to do, even though we can make better use of our time, without much training. The one area I see that needs help, is the internet marketing that is now an essential part of every business.
As owners, we have to work on developing, improving and understanding our products and services. Our expertise in this area is why we started our business to begin with. For most of us, website or internet marketing is something that we know a little about, but in most cases, not enough to capitalize on its full potential.
Every small business should have on staff or at least on call an internet, website, editor. This is a different position that having a computer “geek” on staff or on call. The computer expert can fix your computer and help you install new hardware and software, but that is really where their expertise lies. Unfortunately, we ask the “geek” to also set up our web site with proper designs and content.
When using any form of the internet, we are really publishing something to send to someone. That includes e-mails, blogs, e-newsletters, websites, etc. Publishing is all about getting the right content to the right person at the right time. The editing function is a critical quality control function, rejecting poor content and cutting out the unnecessary text.
In today world of computers, smart phones, i-pads, etc, the way we are perceived as a business is how we are represented in these different areas. ( yes, that includes your twitter, facebook, etc.)
For me, this internet, website, editor ( still haven’t come up with a good name for this person) should be one of your very first employees. This job is so complex ( content, feedback from visitors, promotion, analysis, etc) that it will eventually, as your business grows, become a department within your organization.
My advice is to act now; your growth and future success will be tied to your ability to excel in this area. Always work with your coach/mentor is setting up your different departments even if you are still a one person operation.
It lis not enough to be busy, so are the ants. The question is, what are we busy about?
