Outsourcing is a “foreign” word for most small businesses. Several thoughts enter their minds:
- I can’t afford it…
- I can do it myself…
Most small businesses usually have something that should be outsourced. This blog will address the possibility of outsourcing your Website and IT operations. Of course, if that is your business, this is not the area that you may need to outsource.
If you sell a product or service you know the importance of having the proper tools to both sell and service your customers/clients. As your business grows you will need to upgrade your website as well as your IT needs. If you try to do this yourself you are neglecting your core business and more than likely doing a “bad job”.
Outsourcing has many benefits, including:
- Cost reduction
- Reliability of service
- Allows you to focus on your core business
- Eliminate the need for additional full time staff
- Gives you greater flexibility.
As with any other business expense, you want to get the best product/service for your business. Many vendors will try to sell you what they want you to have. The best thing to do is to work with your business coach and think through your needs. When you meet with possible vendors you will know exactly what you need.
In the selection processes consider the following: is it a stable company? Is it well funded? How satisfied is their current customer base. Have they worked with businesses similar to yours? When you outsource, it is important that you think in terms of a long term relationship so consider the following:
- Have a contract drawn up itemizing what is expected of each party
- Determine how you will measure progress
- How will security and privacy issues be handled
As a small business owner you don’t have time to keep up with the entire latest technological advances that your company will need. Outsourcing will give you the time to properly grow your business. The other issue that may need to be outsourced is the “accounting/bookkeeping responsibility. In many cases I find that this critical area I often neglected.
Don’t hire because a service is “cheap”, hire because it will do the right job for our company.
