Business owners thrive on activity; if there is quiet time we may feel something is wrong. Activity has many definitions, the one I think most of us equate to is “busy time”. The problem is, not all “busy time” is productive time.
I am sure that there are days when you wonder where the time went. You were busy all day but don’t feel that sense of accomplishment. Most of the time we blame days like that on poor time management, too many interruptions, general disorganization (lack of operating systems), customer issues, and on and on and on……
Not just slowing down, but finding a private space and stopping for a short time, should be a part of every business owner’s day. It doesn’t have to be scheduled; this private time should be taken when your inner self tells you. The “space” can be sitting on a park bench, going to your place of worship, sitting in your office and not taking calls, or just going for a walk.
The length of time to spend in your space can be anywhere from 5 minutes to a half an hour. Don’t worry about time, you will know when it’s time to go back to the reality of work.
No agenda is necessary; in fact, don’t have an agenda when you go to your “space.” I call this time one where you let go and let God take over. Like anything else that is worthwhile, repetition is a requirement for this private time to be effective.
My own personal experience with my own space and also those of my business friends that have adopted this system is one of peace and rejuvenation. You may not leave your space with a brilliant solution to all your problems, but you will be better able to cope with whatever faces you the rest of the day.
If you are like most small business owners, this is the time of year when you start thinking about next year. Plans may be written or just in your mind (the wrong place to put them) but in any event, you are optimistic that next year is going to be better than the last one. I challenge you to find your space today and start using it. If you go in without an agenda, your mind will give you input into what is needed to make every aspect of your day better.
You will never change your life until you change something you do daily.
