I recently read an article by Bob Veres in a Financial Planning publication. The subheading to the article was in part “Courage, confidence and commitment are what struggling businesses ( I substituted the word businesses, he had the word planners) need to chart a clearer path to business success.”
I have been thinking about those three words and have applied them to clients that were or are struggling and what they did or need to do to succeed. The following are my short recommendations to all small businesses based upon the 3 C’s:
Courage is demonstrated by the fact that you are contemplating or are running a small business. Running a small business requires you to wear all the “hats” required in achieving success, from being a janitor to being a CEO; some of the required jobs may make you feel uncomfortable. Wear the badge of Courage proudly and know that you are one of the few who is willing to take a calculated risk to better themselves, their family and ultimately, their country.
In my opinion, this is a critical part of small business success. Never doubt your decision to be in business for yourself. The product or service may change, the marketing and management processes may change but the confidence in your ability to succeed should always be in the forefront of your action.
The most important of the 3 C’s; it goes back to my definition of Character: the ability to carry on after the mood has left you. It’s fun to start and run your own business, but there will be roadblocks coming your way from unexpected places. Your success is based on your commitment and determination to succeed.
Put these three words on a plaque and hang it in your office so that you can see it every day. Remember how these three words helped you arrive at where you are and how you need to persevere in both your thoughts and actions.
The ancestor of every action is a thought. Ralph Waldo Emerson
