Staying connected has been a popular topic, unfortunately, the connection that is written about is something other than connecting with someone face to face. Yes, the internet has made staying connected an almost effortless task, but at the same time it is taking away a basic human need, personal interaction with others.
Let me clarify with whom such a personal contact is made and why it is necessary. As humans, we have a basic need for community. As we grow from childhood into adulthood we come to understand our place in the world through our interactions with others. Our parents, our friends, and our teachers all help mold us into what we become as an adult.
Now as an adult and business owner, we have not outgrown our need for personal contact. Socializing with friends is a good way to relax and get away from the pressures of running a business, but we now need another type of personal contact.
If we close ourselves off from others in our business life we miss out on an opportunity to develop our business into all that it can become.
Just as our parents were truthful with us as we were growing up we need the same type of person to stay connected within our business growth life. Our parents pushed us to excel in school and other types of activities we pursued as we were growing up. They told us when we were doing something wrong and we could trust their input. They kept us on track to be prepared for our lives as adults. They listen to us and allowed us stop “push the envelope” when it was good for us and asked us to stop when they thought we were going in the wrong direction.
I don’t know of any business that grew in isolation. Hiding in an office and developing a business will, at some point, have to be brought into the real world. During that development time there will be situations that need another ear.
The person that is selected to be your truthful sounding board must be one that you respect and trust. It has to be someone that will allow you to share your most personal business thoughts and know that they will be listened to and answered with your best interest in mind.
First we form habits, then they form us. Conquer your bad habits or they’ll eventually conquer you.
