Last night I was reminded of an essential component for business success. A client recommended that I join Local First Arizona. I paid my very reasonable dues and went to a new member orientation held at a member’s place of business, Harper’s Nursery & Landscaping Co. Before I talk about this very important ingredient, let me share some information on Local First Arizona.
Arizona Local First is the brain child of Kimber Lanning, an Arizona small business owner. The following is from their own, published information:
“Local First Arizona (LFA) is a non-profit organization working to strengthen communities and local economies through supporting, maintaining, and celebrating locally owned businesses throughout the state of Arizona. We educate citizens, stakeholders, business leaders, and legislators about the significant environmental, economic and cultural benefits of strong local economies. We build vibrant communities that make residents proud to call home.”
With over 2500 members, and growing, Local First Arizona offers many benefits which allow members to support each other and to get their stories out to the greater Arizona community. More membership and benefits information is available at: www.localfirstaz.com .
The evening started with a presentation by Kimber Lanning on the history of Local First Arizona. As she spoke I realized that one of the secrets to the success of this undertaking was her passion. Even though she started work on this idea in 2002 she exhibited the same excitement that a child shows when receiving a much awaited toy.
The importance of having a passion for your business and being able to share that excitement and belief when you tell your story will get a much better response from your listener. All of us have listened to many people tell us “what they do”. How many of those “stories” do you remember?
Your challenge today is to record your story and listen to it. Does it show “passion”? This is a good exercise as it will allow you to also monitor your content, your articulation and, most of all, your excitement about your chosen profession.
I am looking forward to getting very involved in this organization and to supporting its involvement in helping Arizona, mostly small businesses, grow. I encourage you to join this great organization.
