Business owners that are in need of something and try their best to obtain it at little or no cost are setting themselves up for a possible business failure. Be it a piece of office equipment, or a free mentor, or a free seminar on how to grow a successful business, or one of the other business needs a small business owner “has to have.”
By taking this tract in growing your business you are establishing, both to others and in your mind, that there is little value in what you do. If you believe in your business and its future potential, then give something of value in return for an item or support. If you are afraid of the giving act because someone might benefit from your product/service then, you will face the 50 – 80% chance of failure in the next few years.
Let me share an example; I had a call from a person with a business dream. During our initial visit he told me that having a mentor was too expensive, but if I would do it for free, we can negotiate a fee when the idea comes to fruition. When I or other professional mentors/coaches receive such a call they will set up a free appointment and listen to the “dreamers” story. If there are no funds available but the idea is viable and the “dreamer” shows an authentic passion and belief in his dream, then we can offer choices.
Because I know what results I can bring to a business I can offer to take an ownership percentage in the business, or participate in the profits of the company. No, I cannot put every one into this type of a program, but once in a while a very worthwhile idea is presented. I schedule them as any other client, and we use a binding contract that spells out the responsibilities, time check points, and the duration and optional renewal of such a contract.
I turn down requests and business owners turn me down, mostly out of selfishness. they are afraid that it could become another “Apple” and they gave away too much. Always remember, a hundred percent of nothing is still nothing.
The world is full of abundance and opportunity, but far too many people come to the foundation of life with a sieve instead of a tank car…..a teaspoon instead of a steam shovel. They expect little and as a result they get little. Ben Sweetland
I always am open to hear your story.
