In an Inc. magazine a survey of its Inc.500 showed that 88% of the CEOs attributed their company’s success primarily to the extraordinary execution of an idea.
What is your Tactical Excellence rating?
As business owners we get excited about a new concept, product or service, and we are in a hurry to get it to market as soon as possible. Perhaps you are one of the few who took time to develop strategies and then prioritized them; but unless specific milestones, specific dates, and specific people were assigned to implement the details in the strategy, success will not occur.
Two other rules have to be included in Tactical Excellence, and they are:
- Work is consistently done well
- There is continual improvement in the work
To accomplish these tasks I will refer to a list provided by James Collins and William Lazier in their book BEYOND ENTREPRENEURSHIP:
- Have a clear understanding of what needs to be done. It’s impossible to do something “well” if you don’t know what needs to be accomplished. That includes the understanding of accountability.
- Have the right skills for the job. As a business owner one of the hardest things to admit is your lack of knowledge on a specific subject. Don’t be afraid to admit your lack of knowledge on a subject, it’s a sign of leadership.
- If you assign a task to someone, let them have the freedom and support to accomplish it.
- People execute well if they’re appreciated for their efforts. That includes family and friends that help in your business as well as suppliers and strategic alliances.
- People execute well if they see the importance of their work. My wife has been my right hand since I first started in business. She is the “behind the scene person” that makes everything happen; without her, I would not be able to run my business. She is the most important part of my business and personal life.
Tactical is defined as: relating to small-scale actions serving a larger purpose. Understanding the meaning of Tactical Excellence and then applying it to your business is the most difficult part of growing a business.
